Annual Report of ESPR Working Group on Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology (WGPPE) Athens 3.12.1997

Dear colleagues,
* During the WGPPE business meeting in Lyon it was agreed to organize a plenary session in Szeged related to "Old and new infections in Europe". It was thought this session to be held jointly with ESPID which was a participating society in the ESPR-meeting. As a result, the organizers, Prof. Schaad (president of ESPID) and Prof. Temesvari, sent for evaluation to the WGPPE council both papers on epidemiology and infectious diseases. This was done separately by all the five members of the council and the mean grade for each paper was calculated. Prof. Syriopoulou was the guest speaker and the plenary session led to an interactive discussion. * Secretaries from all the other WGs kindly responded to our suggestion and sent us papers from their subspecialty with a strong epidemiologic basis to be presented in WGPPEÆs sessions. * Out of the 10 submitted papers purely on Epidemiology 2 were rejected, 5 were assigned for posters and the remaining 3 together with other 3 on epidemiology-neonatology formulated an oral session. Both the oral and the poster sessions were successful with lots of constructive comments. * According to our constitution, Dr. Virtanen was replaced by Dr. Giuseppe Banderali (IT) in the council while, Dr. Umberto de Vonderweid expressed his intention to step down next year. * The topic for the next meeting in Belfast, according to our schedule, will be "Accidents in Europe and Prevention". A speaker has already been found and Prof. Halliday has been informed. Thus, I would be obliged in case you know colleagues working on accidents in your country to encourage them in presenting their data.
